This medium-sized Spaniel variety, originating from England, was originally bred for hunting. In addition to the brown (liver) and black Fields, we also have the gray (roan) as an allowed color. Each of these colors can possibly occur in combination with a tan marking.
As for every dog with a pedigree, a “breed standard” has also been drawn up for the Field Spaniel. This happens in the country of origin, for our breed this is England. This standard describes the requirements that the ideal Field Spaniel must meet. To date, the perfect dog has never been bred. That won’t happen anytime soon, because the breed standard can be interpreted freely. Most importantly, the Field Spaniel is a healthy and sociable dog that is an asset to the family in a suitable environment. With its medium-length coat, it is a sober dog, unadorned and easy to handle.
The Nature Of The Beast
The Field Spaniel is a dog with a gentle and very endearing character. A hunting dog from home, who, as a family dog, will do his utmost to please everyone. Social towards other pets and very loyal to the members of “his” family. He can sometimes be somewhat reserved towards strangers. In the house it is a quiet dog who, however, closely follows the affairs of the house. That is why it is extra striking that he is undergoing a “metamorphosis” outside, so to speak. There he turns into an active and sporty dog. The Field Spaniel is a smart dog that is very eager to learn. By making use of these qualities, the Field Spaniel is an easy-to-train dog. Taking an obedience course is recommended because raising children does not happen automatically! You also build a better bond with your dog. Apart from that, it is very pleasant and necessary to have a dog that listens. With this spaniel, originally intended for hunting, there are many more possibilities than just hunting training. He knows how to hold his own in various areas of dog sports. Agility, tracking, knitting, flyball and of course in the hunting field. The choice of what you want to do with your Field depends on you, but especially on the dog’s disposition. It is important, however, that due to the sensitive character, his entire upbringing and training is done with a “kid gloves”.
